The 1957-1958 WLHS Boys’ Hoop squad had an amazing season.

The team, lead by legendaryCoach Al Shapiro, WLAHOF Class of 2017, stormed to a 17-1 regular season record winning the school’s fourth consecutive Central Valley C League title.

Future WLAHOF inductees Peter Lingua and Brian McKeown were key team members.

The Locktowners rode the wave straight to the state semifinals.

Sadly Locks lost a heartbreaker in overtime to Woodbury 52-51 in front of just over 2,300 people at the Field House at the University of Connecticut campus in Storrs.

It was a tough shooting night for the hometown squad as they finished the game 18 of 68 from the field and 15 of 32 from the charity stripe.

WL, ahead after three quarters, was led by Bill Wegrzyniak with a game high 18 points.

WLHS squads lost in the state hoop finals in 1955, 1957, 1961, and 1988 before finally climbing all the way to the mountaintop in 2001.
