David Farr

Dave Farr did not need to win back-to-back state baseball championships to validate his ability as a coach or his worthiness for induction into the Athletic Hall of Fame.

Since 1964, Dave has been a fixture in Windsor Locks, coaching baseball, basketball, and soccer to three generations of athletes.

Dave has been involved in athletics almost all his life. He has lived in Windsor Locks for 54 years.

Growing up across the street from Denslow Park was perfect for a young man interested in sports. There were always games going on at Denslow Park; sometimes even 15 vs. 15 baseball games. Many of the great athletes from Windsor Locks got their start playing pickup games at Denslow.

Dave’s father was a good athlete who played football and baseball at Manchester High, and he encouraged Dave’s involvement in sports. Dave played soccer and baseball at Windsor Locks High.

He was a member of the 1964 state soccer championship team and the 1966 state baseball championship team.

Dave started coaching Saturday morning basketball in 1964 while he was still in high school. Since then, he has coached a number of sports at all different levels.

In the early 70’s he coached girl’s basketball at St. Joseph Middle School.

He returned to Windsor Locks to coach freshman and Junior Varsity basketball for 15 years.

His Junior Varsity teams won two league play-off championships and had only one losing season.

Dave coached soccer for over 12 years in the town’s recreational league and at the junior varsity level for the high school.

He has also served as the town’s recreational director for the past sixteen years.

But baseball is Dave’s favorite sport. Dave began his “career” as a baseball coach in 1965 and has coached baseball for the better part of 40 years.

From little league through senior league, Babe Ruth, and American Legion, Dave has succeeded at every level, including an American Legion League Championship in 1981.

His passion for baseball led to his role as an administrator in American Legion baseball for over 25 years.

He was State Director of American Legion baseball for 7 years, State treasurer for 10 years, and has been responsible for the umpires in the state tournament for the past 20 years.

Dave was honored with the first American Legion Baseball Committee Leadership award.

In the early 1980’s Dave began coaching baseball at Windsor Locks High School.

In 2003 Dave became the varsity baseball coach.

He teams have gone on to win 3 league championships and 3 league play-off championships and have qualified for state tournament every year. In 2004, his team reached state semi-finals.

In 2005 and 2006, they won the state championship.

Dave married Windsor native Susan Goldsmith in 1973. Dave and Susan have 3 children Michael, Anthony, and Mark and our proud grandparents of grandson Jonathan.

Dave was a teacher for 35 years and taught in Windsor Locks for 30 years before retiring a few years ago.

As hard as it was to follow a legend like Dave’s friend and mentor Dan Sullivan, Dave has distinguished himself on the state and regional level as the consummate baseball coach and administrator.

Long before back-to-back state championships brought him notoriety, the athletes he coached knew the quality of the man.
