gary morrell

Gary Morrell was one of the best runners in Windsor Locks High School history.  A three year member of Coach Peter Sarant’s Indoor/Outdoor track teams Gary quickly established himself as a star on the 880 yard relay squad which had several first and second place finishes. Individually he participated in the 440 yd dash, where he finished either second or third, against experienced competition.

As a junior, Gary ran the 100 yard dash, the 220 yard dash, the 300 yard dash, the 440 yard dash, along with the 880 yard relay. Proving he was up to the challenge, Gary produced many first place finishes, an occasional second place finish, and one third place finish. He ended the year as the State Champion in the 300 yard dash, and helped Windsor Locks capture the Class B Indoor State Championship.

Gary’s senior year was one for the ages.  He seemed to dominate every meet ultimately becoming the State Champion in the 220 yard dash. He established a school record in the 440 with a time of 49.8 seconds; a mark that has yet to be matched more than 50 years later.

The Windsor Locks High School track team enjoyed unprecedented success in the 1960’s.  With his record setting accomplishments, Gary Morrell was a key reason for that success.

Gary’s brother Bob was inducted into the WLAHOF in 2006.
